The City advises minimizing oak pruning from February 1 through July 1 and checking that pruning contractors hold a valid City-issued tree maintenance license. Ask the professional how this guidance applies to your tree and timing. City of San Antonio: oak-wilt guidance.
Start with the outcome, not a cutting list
Describe what you need to change: clearance over a roof, a branch conflict, a declining tree or space for another use. Ask whether a targeted pruning scope could meet the goal before treating removal as the only option. A website description cannot diagnose tree health or determine structural safety.
Call to describe the problem and ask about service for your ZIP. Availability is confirmed on the call.
Separate planned pruning from an urgent assessment
For routine work, discuss the species and proposed season with the provider. If a tree or limb has shifted, describe that change from a safe location. Do not wait for a website ZIP result when people, power lines or structures face immediate danger; contact emergency services or the utility as appropriate.
Ask who is responsible for permissions
Give the contractor the property address privately during the call and ask which jurisdiction applies. Discuss ownership, any HOA requirements and whether permits or other approvals are needed. A mailing address or ZIP label alone does not settle these questions.
Make the access plan explicit
Tell the provider about side gates, overhead wires, driveways and fragile landscaping. Ask where equipment would enter and what protection is included. If access would require a neighbor’s property, arrange permission before a work date is confirmed.
Decide what happens below the cut
Ask for removal, stump grinding, chip removal, backfill and surface restoration as separate line items. State whether you want to replant, install a path or leave a planting bed. The desired finish affects the scope; a cut trunk does not mean the whole job is complete.
Plan replacement planting as its own task
Discuss mature size, overhead and underground constraints, watering responsibility and what is included in installation. Do not assume the removal quote includes a replacement tree, aftercare or a survival guarantee. Request those details in writing if they matter to your project.
Before you agree to work
- Tree species if known, number of trees and the clearance or removal goal
- Routine timing versus a recent change that needs assessment
- Side-gate width, access restrictions and areas to protect
- License and insurance verification; responsibility for permissions
- Stump, chip removal, cleanup and any replacement planting listed separately
Use the San Antonio estimate planner to organize the written scope.
